Appointment and Length of Term
The 46th Ward Republican Committeeman provides a precinct by
precinct list of names of qualified Republicans to serve as
Republican election judges to the Chicago Board of Elections.
Judges of election are appointed by the Board of Election
Commissioners and are confirmed by the Court 35 days prior to
any election. Once appointed, judges of election are expected to
serve in all elections within their term. At the end of a term,
all election judges must reapply for the next term.
Required Training
State election law requires judges of election to complete four
hours of training during the two-year term. Training sessions
are held prior to each election by the Board of Elections. All
judges must attend and satisfactorily complete the course. Upon
successful completion of the course, election judges will
receive additional compensation for each election served. Judges
will receive printed instruction materials, including a Judge of
Election Handbook, Study Guide and Quiz and training
supplements.
Responsibilities of Judges of Election
A judge of election, once appointed and confirmed by the Circuit
Court, becomes a deputy of the Court and is obligated to serve
for the full two-year term of appointment. Failure to serve
and/or to notify the Board of Election Commissioners prior to an
election of inability to serve in an emergency will constitute
cause for removal. Judges of election who resign must notify the
Board of Election Commissioners in writing. Judges are officers
of the Court and responsible to the Board of Election
Commissioners while serving on Election Day.
Salary
A judge of election is paid $100 for serving on election day. In
addition, the judge will receive an extra $50 for each election
if he or she has successfully attended the required training
sessions. Extra compensation is also paid to election judges who
return election materials at night.
